. Each Cross is cut from 1/8″ Baltic Birch Plywood using a scrollsaw. The GRAIN of wood will vary since wood is a natural product,

. The photo is for the style of this cross. They are hand sanded, stained and finished with several coats of a thin polyurethane lightly sanded between coats. I have included a wire hook for use as a ornament, you may remove the wire ornament hook and use a small brad nail to hang on a wall.

A cross with a ring surrounding the intersection. It belongs to a kind of crosses with a
nimbus
.  Became popular for funerary monuments and other uses, and has remained so, spreading well beyond Ireland.
Other Names of the Celtic Cross:
High Cross, Scottish Cross, Irish Cross, Welsh Cross, Anglican Cross, St. Luke’s Cross, St. John’s Cross, Halo Cross, Sun Cross, Disc Cross.
In Germany and Netherlands, it is called the
Keltisch Cross
and in various countries it is known as the
Gaelic Cross
. The design is popular in Ukraine and adorns the tops of cupolas, where the circle sometimes has rays emanating out, much like a Sun symbol.
Anglicans and Episcopalians usually call this the
Anglican Cross
,
Episcopal Cross
or
Celtic Cross
, whereas Catholics often refer to it as the
Irish Cross

The of Process of making each Cross
My Crosses are cut using a Hawk
Scrollsaw
. This process is started by drilling a small hole in every
cutout area. Then the scrollsaw blade is inserted through the
(1/16 or smaller)
hole and connected back to the scrollsaw,
and cut. The Blade is disconnected from the scrollsaw and threaded back through the next hole and that part of the
design is cut out. This process is repeated for every inside cut. This is a very time consuming art known as
Fretwork
.
I then take the cut crosses and sand both sides.
Next hand brush stain on the entire piece. I let the stained cross dry overnight.
I start the lacquering process. I brush a coat of Minwax® Wipe-On Poly this is a very thin lacquer and I let it dry
and I sand the entire cross with a very fine 220 grit sandpaper. I repeat this process two times on each cross,
then do a final coat of lacquer.
After drying for a couple of days I do a final inspection and prepare them for packaging.
Crafts like this is a work of love, obviously the small price for one of these crosses barely covers materials (wood, stain, lacquer, S&H etc.)
